New Opportunities for 2009

Happy New Year to you all!

We are excited about the possibilities of 2009 - there is much opportunity.
Our management team is talking about our priorities.

I dedicate time each month to spend with each manager individually. We review the past month: what has gone well, what has not got done, the struggles of the month, etc. We then make plans for the next month, talking about the opportunities that are available and how to maximize impact. Each manager has a small group of team leaders that they mentor in a similar way.

I am hoping that in 2009, this will flow down so that more of our team has this opportunity to reflect on their practice and to become increasingly more effective in their workplace....and in their lives.

Very soon we will be splitting Admatha Lodge and Millvale Waikanae into two homes. This is in keeping with our vision and values. We think that caring for residents in small homes makes a big difference, giving the people we care for the greatest opportunity for receiving very individualised care and for being involved in the running of their home. We are excited about this.

We here ate Aberlegh Rest Home in Blenheim are very happy to announce that we have recently divided the Rata unit in our facility into two smaller homes. The first days took some adjustment however,with the help of our tireless care staff and the cooperation of our residents and their families, the homes are now running smoothly. Kudos to the staff and warmest regards to the residents and families at Aberleigh!

The other day at Aberleigh in one of the small homes the residents were sitting chatting with the staff member who was in the kitchen in the home. I heard one of the men ask the staff member "Any chance of a cuppa". She made a cuppa - I loved this - so homely!

Quite true, Alison. At Avonlea (for those who do not know) there are five different rest homes, each with a slightly different 'feel' to them. I find it increasingly difficult to walk through one without plonking myself down on a comfy chair and having a 'natter' with somebody. Inevitably a cup of tea will appear and before long I have spent a very pleasant 5 minutes listening to and chatting with a resident. Perhaps a career as a professional visitor beckons....

Tonight we had our first focus group meeting - a meeting with a small group of family members, talking ideas, brainstorming about possibilities. We received great feedback particularly in relation to meeting our vision and values. We discovered that family members had no knowledge about delirium. We were surprised about this and we are now wondering how we can educate family members about this.
