Millvale - About Us

About Us

We welcome new residents and like getting to know them. Moving into a special home can be difficult and adjusting takes time. Making new friends also takes time and effort.

Over time, we develop what really works for each person. We discover what he/she likes to do most, most active times, times when he/she likes to rest. We explore, discover, and initiate what works best for each person. This will often reflect past activity patterns and interests.

People can continue with familiar roles, arranging flowers, setting the table, hanging out some washing, raking up the leaves in the autumn, planting a vegetable patch means that they have a purpose in life. They are involved in the running of their home. We go out sometimes.Sing-a-longs are enjoyed by many. We have fortnightly church services.

Family

Family become part of the community we have. They can be involved in their loved ones’ care. They are encouraged to share their in-depth and intimate knowledge of their loved one. There is much honesty and openness. This builds trusting relationships between us all. Family are always welcome and there is an open invitation to stay for a meal.

We offer family the opportunity to be part of a monthly support group. An independent facilitator facilitates this group. This is an opportunity to be with people who know what it is like to have a family member with dementia. The journey which involves many struggles and joys can be shared with others.

We rely on family to tell us what is going well and what we can do better. How can we make things better for you and your family? Please come and talk with us if you have any suggestions or concerns at all. We need your help.

Visiting can sometimes be difficult. We really enjoy helping family to make visits go well.

Activities

We have diversional therapists who are trained or training, one for each home. They work with residents to help them to get to know each other, have fun, develop interests, exercise their bodies and stimulate their minds. Entertainers come into the home on a regular basis for the residents' enjoyment.
